This asset is a strand based female body hair which was created to improve upon the original "Vellus by Causam" way back in 2018 (originally sold through another broker with whom I am no longer affiliated). A lot of work and testing has gone into making this asset easy to use and versatile for maximum Iray render utility in Daz Studio. Among the improvements is the use of selection sets to allow the artist to control the hair on different areas of the body, improved mapping, and better directionality. Loading the Hair 1. Choose your character in the "Scene" tab. 2. Navigate to Vellus 2.1 in your assets folder, where you installed it. 3. Choose the asset you wish to work with, ie, face or body (NOTE: body does not include the face and ears. Conversely, face does not include any part of the body below the face and ears, so you may want to load both depending on your render setup). Selection Sets Now that your hair asset(s) is loaded, you'll probably want to do a quick test render to see how things look for your character in the lighting, pose and camera angle you have set up, or more simply, just make sure that you're in Iray review mode on your viewport. Vellus 2.1 default settings are good for most situations however the artist generally with any render setup wants to fine tune things, and this is where selection sets come in. First, select the hair asset from your Scene tab, then go to Edit → Object → Edit Strand Based Hair: The Strand Based Hair editing interface will appear. Note the button (Update Surfaces) in the lower right hand corner highlighted here in yellow. It is strongly advised that you click this button if you have posed your character already. (NOTE: I don't advise loading the hair until you have your character in her pose for your scene because if you move her significantly after loading the hair, you'll need to open the interface and click the Update Surfaces button again). Choosing and Updating After clicking "Update Surfaces", go to your "Style" tab by clicking on it at the top of the interface: On the right side about midway down you'll see a section called "Curve Selection Sets". The names are pretty explanatory but you will see which areas are covered if you click on one of them, then click the "Add" button below the list. The affected hair guides will turn green. Manipulating You may now change styles just for that particular part of the hair asset. To make the hair more or less prominent, I recommend strongly that you use the "Scale Curves" Tool: There are other tools available in the Style Curves Tools section. Since this is not a general tutorial on Strand Based Hair, I will forego talking about all of them. However I call your attention to the bottom row of tools. These, along with the Comb tool in the middle row, will be your most useful tools for manipulating Vellus 2.1. Feel free to experiment with each of them. I recommend that you make small adjustments and then, to try out what you've done, click the "Accept" button on the very bottom right corner of the interface. The interface will close, and you'll be back at your Daz Studio viewport. The viewport will update to reflect your changes. Adjust any of the selection sets you desire for the look you want. "Shaved" Legs How-To This subsection will show you about using Selection Sets in the most often used adjustment you will probably make, and that will be to make your character's legs appear shaved rather than furry. If you haven't done so yet, please select your character and then load the "body" hair from your assets folder. Now, open the Strand Based Hair editor as described above. In the Style Tab, under Curve Selection Sets you will see "Legs and Feet". Click this, then click the "Add" button just below the list of selection sets. The leg curve guides will turn green. Next, select your "Scale Curves" tool from the box at the top right (as illustrated earlier). Finally, with your mouse inside the view pane where your character is, left-click and drag to the left until the yellow arrow stops getting longer. Click "Accept". Now your character's legs are "shaved". Easy, right? Rendering In Iray As someone who develops assets tuned to, and who himself renders in Iray, I cannot speak to the performance of Strand Based Hair in 3Delight or other render engines. It is assumed that the artist is already familiar with those subjects for his/her particular rendering engine preference, so here I will discuss the most useful methods for getting best results in the Nvidia Iray render engine. SubD vs Base Resolution The best rule of thumb for Vellus 2.1 in this regard is, "The closer your camera is, the more likely you'll want to use SubD". That means, in general, that for tight shots (depending on your lighting setup and camera settings) you'll probably get a more realistic result if you convert the asset to SubD in the usual way: Edit → Object → Geometry → Convert to SubD. It is an exception with Strand Based Hair that every time the asset is edited in the Strand Based Hair editor, you will have to re-apply SubD. While the SubD levels are saved, the SubD modifier itself seems to be jettisoned by the editor. I don't know why this is, but you should be aware of it. Test both base resolution and with SubD applied to arrive at what you feel is the best result. Translucency, Metallicity and Base Color These two surface settings are absolutely critical if you want to further modify or enhance what the SubD decision you made above accomplished. Translucency: the translucency used by default for Vellus 2.1 gives a very good result, in general. However you may wish to make the body hair more visible or less visible without changing the resolution settings. To make the hair more visible, adjust this number downward with the appropriate slider in the "Surfaces" tab. To make it less visible adjust the number upward. You can also experiment with changing the "Translucency Color". Metallicity: metallicity will determine how specular and "metallic" your peach fuzz will look in Iray. I recommend keeping this setting (for realism) at no higher than .5, however, this again depends a great deal on your lighting and camera setups. When it comes to this setting, a little goes a long way, so be conservative at first in your settings. Base Color: you may never wish to change this, however, you may need to in the event your character has a very dark skin tone, for example. Changing this will help you more closely match the peach fuzz to your character. I recommend saving the material preset if you do this. And That's All, Folks... Please have fun with Vellus 2.1!
