When rendering interiors, a common challenge is preventing exterior light from overpowering or washing out your internal lighting setup, especially when using cameras positioned outside the structure looking in. Iray Section Planes offer a powerful solution to this by allowing you to "cut away" parts of your scene without physically altering the geometry. 1. Understanding Iray Section Planes Iray Section Planes are virtual cutting planes that tell the renderer to ignore geometry on one side of the plane. This is incredibly useful for: Composing Shots: Framing your scene precisely without needing to hide individual walls or objects. Improving Render Times: By "hiding" unseen geometry, the renderer has less to calculate. Preserving Interior Lighting (our focus!): This is where section planes truly shine for interior scenes. 2. Setting Up Iray Section Planes for Interior Lighting Follow these steps to use Iray Section Planes to preserve your interior lighting: Load Your Scene: Place your interior set and figures as desired. Set up your interior lighting (e.g., area lights, photometric lights, emissive surfaces) to create the desired ambiance. Position Your Camera: Place your camera outside the interior space, looking inwards. This is crucial for demonstrating the power of section planes. Add a Section Plane: Go to Create > New Iray Section Plane. A new "Iray Section Plane" object will appear in your scene and in the Scene pane. Orient and Position the Section Plane: Select the Iray Section Plane in the Scene pane. Use the Universal Tool (or Translate/Rotate tools) to position and rotate the section plane. Goal: You want the section plane to cut through one or more of the exterior walls of your interior set, allowing your camera to see inside while effectively "removing" the wall that would otherwise block the view. Tip: Often, you'll place the section plane just in front of or directly on the plane of the wall you want to cut through. Use the "Perspective View" and "Active View" options to help visualize the cut. Adjusting the "Cut": With the Iray Section Plane selected, go to the Parameters pane. You'll see options like "Invert," "Offset," and "Falloff." Invert: If the wrong side of your geometry is being cut, toggle the "Invert" checkbox. This flips which side of the plane is "active." Offset: Fine-tune the position of the cut along the plane's normal. Falloff: (Less common for simple cuts) Controls how gradually the cut occurs. Multiple Section Planes (Optional): For more complex interior layouts, you might need to use multiple section planes to cut away different parts of the environment. Repeat steps 3-5 for each additional plane. 3. The "Clip Light" Parameter: Preventing Exterior Light Bleed One of the most powerful features when using Iray Section Planes for interiors is the Clip Light parameter. Where to Find It: Select your Iray Section Plane in the Scene pane. Go to the Parameters pane. Under the "Section Plane" section, you will find the "Clip Light" checkbox. What it Does: When "Clip Light" is enabled (checked), any light rays originating from outside the "active" side of the section plane will be blocked. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of your interior lighting. Without it, even with the wall "cut away," exterior light (from your HDRI, Sun/Sky, or distant lights) could still illuminate your interior, washing out your carefully placed internal lights. When "Clip Light" is disabled (unchecked), exterior light will pass through the section plane and illuminate the interior, effectively ignoring the "cut" for lighting purposes. Recommendation for Interiors: For preserving interior lighting and showcasing your internal light sources, always enable "Clip Light" on your section planes. This ensures that only your interior lights illuminate the inside of your scene, creating a more realistic and controlled lighting environment. 4. Render and Evaluate Initiate an Iray render (either Interactive or Final). Observe how the section plane allows you to see into your interior while the "Clip Light" parameter prevents unwanted exterior illumination from affecting your scene.
