dp presents: 'a Stitch in Time'

'a Stitch in time'is a set of 30 Photoshop brushes of various stitching pattern, 1 Photoshop layer style (.asl) to simulate a 3D look of the stitches. The set also includes 30 .png files of brushes for PSP users.

I must tell you, I'm not into scrapbooking. I like the idea of collecting memories, though, and maybe, one day, I will pluck up the strength to organize all my photos in a nice and memorable way.

But I LOVE creating scrapbooking goodies for those of you who like to treasure their moments in a unique way.

For that reason I've created a great set of Photoshop 'stitching' brushes. They are of high quality and various patterns. They are perfect for applying to a high resolution images, because all the brushes are 'thick' and 'bold' and some of them are larger than 100x100px.

The brushes are done to work with Photoshop paths - if you don't know how to use the paths, there are numerous tutorials on the internet to help you learn that. This set is not a simple 'sreen capture' of a stitching pattern transformed into brush. Each brush is digitally drawn in Photoshop using most frequent stitching photos from the web. In this way you get crisp edges, and what is more important, your brushes will follow the path you draw - so you will not have to stamp brushes on new layers, and then rotate them to follow the path. Everything can be done with a few clicks of the mouse. For that reason 'shape dynamics' and 'spacing' of a brush have already been pre-adjusted. You may wish to modify these if you want more dense brush. And if your stitches look too big, you can simply reduce the size of a brush.

This package also contains 1 .asl file - photoshop layer style that will give your stitches the 3d look you see on the promo images. If you are not happy with the style, you can always modify it to your liking and create new styles.

You also get 30 .png files of brushes - this is mainly for PSP users who cannot use PS .abr files. But these files can also be useful if you want to add more variation to your existing brushes. Simply load a .png file of a brush you wish to modify, add your variation by drawing some extra lines or shapes and save as a new brush preset.

The brushes are great not only for scrapbook stitching, but you can use it for texturing new clothes for your favourite poser characters, you can make interesting borders or frames with them, or use them to create lace and lace edges. I am sure you can thing of many ways to use the brushes.

Installation:

You will need an unzipping program (such as WinZip, or you can use WindowsXP's unzipping ability). Unzip the files and place them in a folder of your choice.

dpstitchintime.ABR file (Adobe Photoshop brush file) should be placed in appropriate Photoshop folder, usually that's C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Brushes. Then you load your brushes palette as you would load any other colour brush from within Photoshop.

dpstitchintime.asl file should go to your Photoshop styles' Windows directory (usually C:/Program Files/Adobe Photoshop/Presets/Styles).

Usage Tips or Limitations:

- if you want a straight stitch, simply choose your brush (you may wish to reduce the size - 40 is the one used on the promo images), hold 'shift' key on your keyboard and draw the line.
- for how to use the paths, just do a Google search and you will get a lot of nice tutorials.
- if your brushes do not follow the path, check 'shape dynamics' in your brushes properties' palette. Shape dynamics should be checked, 'size jitter' should be sett to 'off' and 'angle jitter' should be set to 'direction' - this is already done for you when you load your brushes - this little tip is just in case something goes wrong.
- if you want more dense (or loose) brush, play with the 'spacing' setting under 'brush tip shape' in your brushes properties palette.
- the Photoshop style preset looks best if applied to 72dpi images. If you are working at 300dpi, before applying the style, go to your image settings (Image > Image size) and in the popup window, under the resolution, reduce the size to 72dpi, UNCHECK 'Resample image' and press OK. After you have applied the style, simply go back to Image size, write in 300dpi ('Resample image still UNCHECKED!) and press OK again.
