Compass roses or wind roses were used by ancient mapmakers to mark cardinal and wind directions on early maps and charts. Still in use today, they are found on GPS units, nautical charts and by meteorologists. Ancient Romans used a twelve point star, while during the Middle Ages a 16 point star was used by european sailors. Early compasses were very ornate and often used a fleur de lies to indicate north leading to the name compass rose or wind rose. Compass roses have become popular in everything from quilts, floor inlays, fountains, literature and even a major league baseball team. These 12 compass roses range from simple to complex designs in a large range of materials to fill in any decorative need. At 300 dpi on a transparent background with no drop shadows, these large high resolution images are perfect for both print and web applications. Please see readme file for exact sizes. The background in the promotional images is not included.
