Usage instructions contain important tips that will maximize ease of use and your enjoyment of this product. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Product The Vieux Carre Bourbon at StLouis, Copyright 05/18/2013 by Christopher Williams (CWW Digital Media) Renderosity merchant "chris1972" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Description This is a starter set of the New Orleans French Quarter centered at the intersection of Bourbon and St. Louis streets. From this intersection, this first edition extends 1/2 block in all directions. It contains streets, sidewalks, traffic signs and street lights as well as misc. details representing this area. Three buildings, a skydome, lights and light emitters are included as well. Miss Lowens night club contains a detailed bar/lounge area. The other 2 buildings are exterior only. Included in the Miss Lowens Bar is the same liquor bottle set that comes with "Bourbon Street Bar". This is a finely detailed work of art that takes advantage of the latest Poser capabilities such as indirect lighting and subsurface scattering. The bar area and in particular the bottles and glass objects make extensive use of reflection and refraction. As such "The Vieux Carre" is not recommended for older computers or older versions of Poser. This product may tax newer systems with renders often taking 2 hours or more depending on settings. The rich details and beautiful scenes however are well worth the time for discriminating artist looking for the best visualizations achievable. A word about names of businesses Private business names depicted in these models have been unaltered where the name is quite generic or numerous unaffiliated instances appear nation wide. The names of business's that are unique or reference a specific person or owner have been altered. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- System Requirements Poser 9 and up, Windows 7 64bit recommended, lots of ram, at least 8 gig I should think (I use 24 gig on my machine)a modern quad core processor and good graphics card. Please unzip first (WinZip or another zip program). You can 1. unzip the file directly into your main Poser directory. 2. unzip the file on your hard drive and then drag the unzipped folder right into your main Poser directory. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Usage Instructions The components for this scene have been broken into several separate prop files. After installation files can be found at "props, The Vieux Carre" Lighting can be found at "Light, The Vieux Carre" I recommend using one of the Poser "wireframe" displays particularly before adding lights to the scene. This will greatly speed up loading and manipulation of the scene. While care has been taken to minimize file overhead these are complex and highly detailed scenes using numerous large texture maps and for night scenes, numerous lights. Lights are contained in several files unique to their building or item. When adding lights from the library to lights that have already been loaded be sure to use the "double check box" "add presets to current scenes lights". This way additional lights will not erase ones that have already been loaded. Moving items As the Vieux Carre depicts an actual place items are not really designed to be moved around. While most components of buildings are parented to the building shell, lights are not. As long as buildings and street lights have not been moved lights will land in the proper position. If the user moves items, lights will have to be manually repositioned. Deleting items from the scene Buildings and their parented components can be deleted by either selecting the building shell on the screen or selecting the parent from the hierarchy editor. If delete attached items is checked in the popup window all components parented to the building will be removed. I highly recommend selecting items through the hierarchy editor or by right clicking on the item so as not to inadvertently move it out of position. Street lamppost street signs etc. are all parented to DPW_Details found in the hierarchy editor. Prop Loading sequence Begin loading items into the scene by first selecting "streets_and_sidewalks","Bourbon_at_Stlouis from the Vieux Carre prop library. The first thing I usually do then is set the camera yon to something like 30,000 (I use inches) (selected through "general preferences","interface", "display units")and z position to 6000 so that I can see the scene. As the scene loads you are looking south down StLouis street. Buildings are identified in the library as Bourbon_SE_1, Bourbon_SE_2 Bourbon_SW_1 etc. Buildings are numbered sequentially as you move further from the intersection. Skydome The skydome comes in both a day and night version, each contains separate front and backlit material zones. This allows independent light emitter adjustment through the material room for the sky in front of and behind the camera. There is also a top "sun" material zone for top lighting adjustments. Depending on your camera position you may need to lower or rotate the skydome for proper viewing. Because there are so many items in this scene I highly recommend using the hiearchy editor for selecting items if you need to move or remove items. Items may also be selected by right clicking on the item and selecting from the pulldown menu. This way you will avoid accidentally moving an item. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Usage tips A word about the scales I work to and use for my models. Long before computers my work began in drafting and model making, so I am used to working in scales of x number of inches = 1 foot. I build my models in Carrera 8 pro and work to a scale of 1" = 1 foot. This is convenient for the Carrera work space and makes it very easy to spot errors. Before exporting the created objects for use in Poser, I scale them to 12.669% To illustrate a 1 foot box in Carrera will be 1" on a side or 72 pts. After scaling for Poser it will be .1267 inches or 9.1217 pts on a side. Or to state another way the finished Poser scale I end up with is 1 foot = .1267 inches or (real world size x .010558) If I import V4 into Carrera she measures 0.7394 inches tall flat footed or 53.2373 pts. That makes her (at the scale I use) 70.0322 inches tall or 5.836 ft. ( 5'-10") I am not attempting to state or establish any "correct" scale for Poser but rather for the convieneince of the user illustrating how I arrived at the scale of objects in my Poser Scenes. A word about the size of doors, rooms and various architectural objects. As you work with my French Quarter Scenes (The Vieux Carre "Old Square in French") you may find doors, windows, and ceiling heights to appear odd. Many of these French Quarter buildings were built in the 1830's with architectural details that seem odd by current standards. Dealing with heat in the deep south was a major concern of architectural designers of the time. To this end ceilings were often 12 to 14 feet high, doors and windows often as much as 8 feet high. The high ceiling heights gave the heat a level to rise to that was well above the living area. Over sized doors and windows allowed for free passage of air. I have tried to make my models fairly accurate and true to the original designs. The buildings of the French Quarter are considered quite historic and are therefore well documented. Much of my reference in the creation of these models comes from the Library of Congress, Historic American Buildings Survey Engineering Record, The Vieux Carre Commision, Tulane University and Google Earth. Gamma Correction ---------------- If you have a version of Poser that has gamma correction capability I do not recommend using it. All of this products content has been developed without gamma correction. Use of Gamma correction can alter the appearance of certain items that was not intended by the artist.My version of Poser 2012 pro loads with this already checked. Go to render settings and uncheck "gamma correction" Subsurface Scattering and Indirect Lighting ------------------------------------------- If your version of Poser (9+)supports these I highly recommend rendering with indirect lighting. The lights and light emitters used in the promo images are included with this product. Render engine settings ----------------------- At least 4 ray trace bounces are required for the bottles to look as they are intended. Less than 4 will give unrealistic renders of the bottles. If you are getting splotchy AO (shadows) on woodwork and various other details either increase the size of the render or decrease min. shading rate. I find I get a good balance at a render size 2500 wide and min shading rate set to .50 Please set the "render over" setting to black, if you neglect to do this you can get some light leaks through the streets and sidewalks. Most of the promo pics where rendered at 3000 pixels wide with the following settings Cast Shadows Subsurface Scattering (on Bar interior shots only) Raytracing Bounces 4 Irradiance caching 52 Indirect light, quality at 52 Pixel sample 19 Min Shading Rate 0.30 Render over black Use Displacement maps Post filter 2 Sinc No Gamma correction Note: As previously mentioned use of a "wireframe" display setting will dramatically speed up prop and light loading, as well as scene manipulation. Also when I render, I always use "render in background" it seems to speed things up a lot. Also when starting a render your computer may take a couple of minutes to start rendering. I have a 64bit system with 24GB ram and my system will often take a couple of minutes to start after I hit the render button. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
